Case Study: Measured Building and Topographic Survey of Vacant Office in Newbury
The Brief: Preparing an Office for a New Chapter
The owner of a vacant office building in Newbury needed highly accurate and detailed survey plans to facilitate upcoming building alterations for a new tenant. As is common with commercial renovations, the project required precise data to ensure that the planned design was fully informed and could proceed without costly errors. The client required a full measured building survey and an external topographical survey to provide a solid foundation for the architectural design. An unexpected challenge arose the morning of the site visit when an overnight snowfall made travel tricky, presenting a logistical hurdle for the survey team.
The Solution: Precision Under Pressure
Operating with our core value of precision and using the latest equipment , our expert survey team executed a comprehensive plan despite the difficult weather conditions. We established a robust control network using black and white targets to seamlessly combine the internal and external data. The Leica RTC 360 laser scanner was deployed for the measured building survey, allowing us to rapidly and accurately capture the entire structure in a detailed 3D point cloud. Simultaneously, the external topographical survey was completed using the high-performance Leica TS16 Total Station. The fieldwork was completed efficiently within a single day, ensuring the client’s project timeline was not compromised.

The Outcome: A Reliable Basis for Confident Design
Following the successful site work, our team processed the extensive data. The topographical data was processed in LSS, and the final deliverables—including highly accurate 2D AutoCAD floor plans and elevations extracted from the point cloud—were exported and supplied as digital surveys in 3D and PDF format, delivered to the client ahead of time. This precise and reliable data directly helped the building owner achieve their goal by providing a reliable basis for design and supporting the process to secure necessary planning approval. By building on this solid foundation of detailed data, the client saved time and money, enabling this fantastic building to successfully navigate its next step and begin a new chapter with its incoming tenant.
