The Brief: Ensuring a Solid Foundation for a New Structure
Axis Surveys was engaged by the site owner of a growing marina development in Derby to provide highly accurate setting out services. The client’s overarching goal was to ensure the successful, swift installation of a new pre-fabricated wooden building. Crucially, a concrete pad had already been laid, meaning the proposed building corners and service points had to be set out with uncompromising accuracy to sit perfectly on the existing foundation. This presented a constraint: the design footprint and services locations had to be precisely fitted to the existing pad, requiring an initial survey to localise the survey and fit the design to the existing structure, leaving zero tolerance for error to prevent costly delays in the build. The Solution: Meticulous Detail and On-Site Verification
As Land & Building Surveying specialists, our approach was meticulous. Our plan began by surveying the existing concrete pad using a Leica TS16 Total Station with a mini prism to maximise measurement Precision on the localised area. This data was immediately downloaded and the proposed design footprint was fitted to the pad in AutoCAD. A single, highly efficient surveyor then uploaded these revised coordinates to accurately mark the proposed building corners and services points directly onto the concrete.
To uphold our ISO 9001:2015 quality assurance commitment , we executed an immediate field check. The set-out points and the pad were surveyed again and compared against the design to ensure perfect conformity before the surveyor left the site. This process was completed efficiently within a half-day.
The data collector allowed for immediate on-site processing and verification, ensuring the coordinates were correct before the surveyor departed.
The Outcome: Streamlining Construction and Enabling Rapid Progress
The final deliverables consisted of the precisely marked points on the concrete pad and a quality assurance 2D CAD plan. By completing the data processing and checks on-site before leaving, we ensured the client’s bricklayers could immediately begin the block work that very afternoon. Our precise data enabled the client’s subcontractors to lay the block work ahead of schedule, paving the way for the smooth and timely arrival and installation of the prefabricated wall sections.
